Foreword

The unification of Europe is not only a reality; the globalisation has also acquired real significance in the private and professional life of all European citizens.

The internationalisation of the economy and society, the electronic highway conveying data and knowledge, the minimising of distances and the maximising of mobility are all elements urging us, as an institute for higher education, to take our responsibility and prepare young people for the new Europe and the global society.

Through various international co-operation programmes we ensure that young people graduating at our institute will acquire a degree complying with certain international standards, thus increasing their chances for employment on the international labour market.

International contacts make sure that the education processes and programmes can bear international comparison at all times. This can only accelerate the improvement of our education’s quality.

The international exchange of students also creates the opportunity to develop a number of important additional skills.
Next to learning the actual subject matters, now more than ever, learning skills has become the axis of education.
Special attention is being given to improving communicative and social skills, developing assertiveness, the capability to present oneself and the awareness of one’s own capabilities. Obviously, it is not absolutely necessary to go abroad to learn all these matters.

However , a stay abroad gives an extra dimension to the development of these skills. To hold ones’ ground in a totally different environment where not only the language but also the culture, the education system and everyday practices are different teaches you to be assertive and to work autonomously without the possibility to turn to your long-standing circle of friends or to familiar organisations.

These are experiences everyone will be confronted with after this study period. Particularly those who aim at an international scientific or business career and must be able to make a difference in all corners of the world, amidst the most diverse of companies.

If education is to prepare people for their future professional career, it must give students the opportunity to gain this experience. Certainly those who, after their study, will not be stopped by country borders or who, through the nature of their field study, will inevitably get into touch with foreign colleagues, must be given the opportunity to study at a foreign institute during a couple of months.

The 20th century has taught us that cultural embedding and the democratisation of education have been essential for our society’s well being.

Today, on the brink of the 21st century, international exchange is essential to experience the richness of other societies, to increase the world community’s well being and to guarantee our students a place in this community.
Our institute is open to reform in an international context. We are willing to share our experiences with you. We most heartily welcome both foreign students and teachers.
