The academic year at most Flemish “hogescholen” consists of 2 semesters. The first usually runs from the middle of September up to the end of January; the second semester runs from the beginning of February up to the beginning of July. Both semesters are closed by exams.
There is a break of one week early November and one week in early spring. There is a break of 2 weeks at Christmas and at Easter.
The bachelor-master structure is gradually being introduced from 2004/5. In this new structure the first and second year of study are divided in 3 terms ending with exams; the first term takes 10 teaching weeks and 2 exam weeks and ends before the Christmas holidays; the second term takes 9 teaching weeks and 2 exam weeks and ends before the Easter holidays; the third term takes 9 teaching weeks and 3 exam weeks. The other years of study are organized in semesters.
