Foreign Student
As a foreign student you will have direct access to higher education if you already hold a Flemish diploma of secondary education or a diploma recognised as equivalent to it on the basis of a law, a decree, a European directive or an international convention. Foreign students who have the required Flemish diploma are eligible, from a strictly legal point of view, for direct registration, even without previous application.
Obviously, most foreign students will have a foreign diploma or certificate. In order to qualify for admission, foreign diplomas must be officially recognised as equivalent with the Flemish by law, decree, European directive or international agreement. If this is the case, the candidates are eligible for enrolment. Information about this official recognition is available at the Belgian embassy. Admittance is also granted to foreign students after individual assessment of their secondary education certificate or diploma, provided, of course, that it gives access to higher education in the student’s country of origin. An admission procedure may take several months, so get going on it at least one full year before you plan to come here!
