ECTS Credits
ECTS credits are a value allocated to course units to describe the student’s workload required to complete them. They reflect the amount of work each course requires in relation to the total amount of work required to complete a full year of academic study at the institution. In ECTS 60 credits represent the workload of one year of study: 30 credits are given for a semester and 20 for a term. It is up to the participating institutions to subdivide the credits for the different courses. Credits can also be allocated to project work, thesis and practical placements where these are a normal part of the study programme.
Credits are awarded only when the course has been completed and all required evaluations have been successfully taken. In Flanders credits are expressed by means of study points. The total workload of one year is 1500-1800 hours, divided into 60 study points. One study point therefore represents 25-30 hours of work. These hours can be contact classes, exercises, personal tasks etc. As such one study point is equivalent to 1 ECTS credit.

ECTS Credit Transfer
There are three documents that are to be filled in and signed: the Student Application Form, The Learning Agreement, and the Transcript of Records
The students participating in ECTS will receive full credit for all academic work successfully carried out at any of ECTS’ partners institutions an they will be able to transfer these academic credits form one participating institution to another on the basis of the prior learning agreement on the content of a study programme abroad between the student and the institutions involved.
When the student has successfully completed the study programme previously agreed upon between the home and the host institutions, and returns to the home institution, credit transfer will take place, and the student will continue his/her studies at the home institution without any loss of time or credit..
All the study units a student has completed during his studies are recorded on the transcript of records. It describes the study achievements in ECTS credits and with ECTS grades.
ECTS also enables further study abroad. The transcript of records is particularly useful in this context as it provides a history of the student's academic achievements.
