Structure of studies

The XIOS Hogeschool Limburg offers programmes leading to profession-oriented bachelor degrees, academic bachelor degrees , master degrees and postgraduate certificates.

Our profession-oriented bachelor programmes prepare students for specific professions in industry, education, commerce, informatics and social work. Courses are therefore practice-oriented and include periods of work placement.

Our academic bachelor programmes prepare students for advanced studies at master’s level in the field of industrial engineering.
Students obtain an initial bachelor degree after successfully completing 180 credits (during a study period of 3 years). The general admission requirement for bachelor programmes is a secondary school-leaving certificate.

Our master programmes in industrial engineering cover 60 credits (1 year of study). They are characterized by the integration of education and research and a master’s dissertation.

Academic bachelor degrees give direct access to master programmes; professional bachelor degrees give access to some master programmes after a bridging course (between 45 and 90 credits).

Students can enrol for a fulltime or halftime programme or for separate subjects.

If you already hold a diploma of higher education, you can be admitted to postgraduate studies at the XIOS Hogeschool Limburg. Admission may depend on a preliminary examination and/or a specific final qualification. As is the case for the undergraduate programmes, foreign students can be accepted on the basis of equivalent degrees. If you opt for any form of postgraduate education, we will grant you a diploma or a certificate.

Teaching and examination methods

The institutional plan stresses on “the central place of the student” in all educational developments and on competence development. Concerning teaching methods, the XIOS Hogeschool Limburg tries to put guided self-study and co-operative learning in balance. This has consequences for the kind of activities taking place during contact moments. Thus lectures are not the dominant teaching method; a lot of contact time is spent in working with small groups, project groups, research projects, practicals etc. Other teaching methods imply adapted evaluation methods. Some subjects are assessed during the exam weeks, other scores are based on work done during the term.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction at the XIOS Hogeschool Limburg is Dutch (with the exception of foreign language courses). However to meet the needs of foreign students, the XIOS Hogeschool Limburg also offers tutoring in English in some courses. In other courses extra information can be provided in English or in another language
In courses taught in Dutch most of the literature and individual supervision can be offered in English.
Incoming students should have a good knowledge of English. In a number of cases French or German may be used instead of English, depending on the knowledge of the visiting student.
Also practical training periods, thesis works and project works can be arranged in English or other languages. Most of the teachers of the XIOS Hogeschool Limburg have an excellent knowledge of French and English and some of them can even help you in Italian, Spanish, German or other languages.
Incoming students should contact the teaching staff of the different departments in this matter.

Language courses for international students

Preparative Dutch language courses are offered to incoming students and courses in English or partly in English and new international modules are planned.
In the departments HWB & IWT language courses (French, English, German), on different level, are integrated in some of the study programmes. All these courses are also open for incoming international students.
Spanish and Italian are offered as an optional course in the department HWB.

Qualifications

All 4 departments offer high-quality courses geared to practical education and training, providing graduates with excellent qualifications that considerably increase their job opportunities.
